In one of the most dramatic finals in Africa Cup of Nations history, Senegal were crowned champions after a wild evening at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, defeating hosts Morocco 1–0 in extra time — a match that descended into controversy, protest and unforgettable drama

The decisive moment came late in regulation time when Morocco were awarded a penalty following a VAR review, a decision that infuriated the Senegalese players and coaching staff. Instead of continuing play, Senegal’s squad walked off the pitch in protest, convinced the referee’s calls were unjust. After roughly 15 minutes of stoppage, and with encouragement from veteran captain Sadio Mané and club legend El Hadji Diouf, the Senegal team eventually returned to the field — just in time to avoid a forfeiture and allow the game to continue.

When play resumed, Morocco’s star attacker Brahim Díaz, the tournament’s top scorer, stepped up to take the penalty. In a bold — and ultimately costly — decision, he attempted a Panenka-style chipped penalty. The shot, however, lacked conviction and was comfortably held by Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy, who stood his ground as the ball floated into his arms.

In the 94th minute, Pape Gueye rose to the occasion with a thunderous strike that beat Morocco’s keeper and sent the Senegal bench into jubilation.
