Today’s big football clash between Newcastle United and Manchester City in the 2025-26 Carabao Cup

Manchester City have taken a crucial step toward a Carabao Cup final spot with a 2-0 victory away at Newcastle United in the first leg of their semi-final tie. The win gives Pep Guardiola’s side a significant advantage heading into next month’s second leg at the Etihad.

City Show Composure After Tight First Half

The first half was a cautious affair with few clear chances, as both teams felt each other out in the chilly Newcastle evening. Newcastle, the current holders of the competition, defended resolutely early on but struggled to generate sustained attacking momentum. Manchester City held more possession and looked the more likely to score, probing for openings without quite threatening Nick Pope’s goal consistently.

Semenya Breaks the Deadlock

The breakthrough came just after the hour mark when Antoine Semenya — a recent Manchester City signing — found the net with a composed finish after good link-up play. The goal silenced the home crowd and gave City a deserved lead in a tie that had largely been level up to that point.

Semenyo’s involvement was a talking point of the night: he later appeared to score again with a clever back-heel effort, only for the goal to be disallowed by VAR after an extended review ruled an offside and perceived obstruction in the build-up. The lengthy delay sparked debate among pundits and supporters alike.

In almost the final moments of stoppage time, Rayan Cherki added a second to seal the victory for City, finishing smartly after a quick break and neat assist. The strike effectively kills off many of Newcastle’s hopes of salvaging a first-leg advantage at home.

With this result, Manchester City head into the second leg with control of the tie, meaning Newcastle must chase the game in Manchester if they’re to reach the final. The second leg is scheduled for early February, and both sides will have time to recover and regroup as the congested season continues.
